Chainsaw Safety Training Course
This chainsaw course/training is designed for the occasional chainsaw user, as an introduction to chainsaw use, and for the safe use of a chainsaw in a workplace. This is not an advanced course and does not cover tree felling.
The course follows the code of practice guidelines and covers the following knowledge and skills:
The course can be customised to incorporate specific company policies and procedures for chainsaw use. We can provide both NZQA and non-NZQA course delivery. We can also review and advise clients on their SOP’s for chainsaw use.
NZQA Unit Standards provided: 6916 and 6917.

- Describe the requirements relating to the transport and use of chainsaw fuel
- Describe personal protection, fire extinguishers, and first aid requirements for chainsaw operators
- How to check a chainsaw, it’s components, and basic maintenance including sharpening the cutting teeth
- Explain how a chainsaw functions
- Demonstrate knowledge of the hazards which influence the operation of the chainsaw (tractive forces and kickback)
- Prepare to operate a chainsaw
- Start and perform safety checks on a chainsaw
- Use a chainsaw to make cuts
- Identify tension and compression wood

This scrub-bar training is designed for the scrub-bar user, as an introduction to scrub—bar use, and for the safe use of a scrub-bar in a workplace.
