4WD Driver Training + AWD/SUV
Our 4WD driver training courses are designed to produce a 4WD operator that can demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and attributes for all essential areas of the units of competency covered under the full “best practice” guidelines for 4WD operation in the workplace. This includes being able to drive a 4WD over varied terrain safely, effectively and responsibly. Driving techniques that minimise negative impact upon the environment are encouraged.
The four wheel driver training course isn’t limited to true 4WD vehicles and can be modified to accommodate AWD or SUV type vehicles that are used in the workplace.
The 4 wheel drive training course follows the code of practice guidelines the course covers the following knowledge and skills:
The course can be customised to incorporate specific company policies and procedures for off road vehicle use. We can provide both NZQA and non-NZQA course delivery. We can also review and advise clients on their SOP’s for off road use.
NZQA Unit Standards include: 17976 (4WD theory), 17978 (4WD practical), 20848 (drive a 4WD on-road), 17678 (drive a 4WD on unsealed roads), 17676 (pre-drive vehicle checks), 17977 (develop a plan for off road driving), 18138 (fit chains), 20620 (develop and execute a pan for 4WD recovery), and general defensive driving (3465 and 3466). Further details can be provided on what these unit standards cover on request. Additional content can be added in order to customise the course to suit workplace requirements.

- Health and safety considerations
- Vehicle designs and operating systems
- Pre-drive preparation
- Mode selection when driving on unsealed or off-road surfaces
- Hazard identification and safety margin assessment specific to terrain
- Terrain contour and composition recognition
- Hill ascents, descents, driving side slopes, and associated problems
- Understanding of vehicle movement utilising traction, momentum, gravity and centrifugal force combinations
- Introduction to trailer towing (on and off road)
- Introduction to four wheel drive recovery techniques and equipment
- Understand new technology (ABS, Traction Control, Electronic Stability Packages)
- General vehicle familiarisation from older models used
